Initial Stakeholder Meetings & Requirement Gathering

To address these issues, we began by conducting stakeholder interviews with a Category Lead for PepsiCo India and a Senior data Scientist to better understand their pain points and goals.

Key Insights

Through these sessions, it became clear the challenges the users face

Disjointed Data Sources:

Teams struggled toggling between Nielsen and internal data, leading to inefficiencies and a disjointed experience.

"We need a seamless way to view both data sets without overwhelming the user."

Lack of Flexibility in Filters:

Other tools required time-consuming manual adjustments for each data view, necessitating a flexible filter system for seamless view switching.

"We need a way to easily toggle between brands, regions, and time periods without losing track of selections."

User Fatigue:

Other dashboards caused user fatigue with too many data points and no clear visual hierarchy, making it hard to navigate effectively.

"We needed a design that simplified data presentation while still being visually engaging."

Enhancing Data Visualization for Pepsico’s Regional Teams.

PepsiCo's teams across Asia and the Middle East were struggling with their existing data analytics tools. It was a fragmented and inefficient process. This impacted their ability to interpret data efficiently, affecting strategic planning and operational effectiveness.

Understanding the Users Challenges

After discussions with the stakeholders, I developed this user persona to represent the key needs, goals, and challenges. This persona guided our design decisions to ensure the dashboard aligned with user expectations.

Issue: Rohan struggled with the dashboard's disjointed data display, needing a more flexible, intuitive interface for seamless comparison and analysis.

Solution and Key Design Decisions

Main Dashboard Overhaul

The main dashboard was the final screen I designed, after creating other screens and understanding stakeholder needs. I identified the most valuable KPIs for decision-making and displayed them prominently with real-time data.

Fixed KPIS & Brand-Specific Data Views

I implemented fixed KPIs for constant visibility, enabling users to track key metrics without losing context. Each brand was assigned primary, secondary, and tertiary colours from its logo, which reduced cognitive load and enhanced brand recognition.

Advanced Filtering and Data Viewing Options

The expanded filter option enables users to manipulate specific data parameters, while the toggle for tabular data offers flexibility for in-depth analysis, catering to diverse user preferences.

Which KPIs are of immediate interest to the user?

Provide an overview of data across all pages, presented with graphs or metrics for the latest data wherever applicable.

Make the KPIs clickable panels that navigate the user to the specific pages.

Is the user familiar with the available filtering options?

Provide Pop up boxes wherever necessary for when the user has to select options to view the data on a specific page

Provide Filters, dropdowns, and date-selectors for users to customise the data view. Also options to select specific brands, years, regions, campaigns, etc.

Are there specific aspects of the visualisations that may require explanation?

Provide Clear and understandable visual representations of the data. Graphs, charts, and tables for easy interpretation.

Also provide an info icon that the user can hover on for more details.

Different Colours for different brands for proper demarcation and for Internal vs Nielsen Data.

User can use different filter options to analyse different segments, like market share, years, brand to interpret comparative data. User may navigate to specific Nielsen and Internal data to view the relevant metrics

Sets up an automated alert for monitoring sales trends in that category.

Are there specific details the user is looking for in the detailed insights?

User hovers on specific data points or visualisations to access more detailed information.
Additionally, user can toggle between graphic visualisation and tabular view of data for in depth insights

User may choose to download reports or export data for further analysis or sharing.

What I learned working with Pepsico

User Feedback Shaped the Solution:

Initially focused on individual graph controls, user feedback led to a unified filter system,
simplifying the dashboard and improving usability.

Visual Cues & Customisation

With a wide range of brand-specific colours involved, balancing aesthetics became a challenge, teaching me the importance of simplifying complex colour palettes to maintain clarity.

Constant Communication is Key:

Daily check-ins with the stakholders ensured project alignment, reinforcing the value of open communication and iterative feedback for better, user-centred decisions.

Design Feedback

Learning from the Pepsico Employees

In feedback sessions, we identified areas for improvement, including a unified filter system for simultaneous graph updates rather than requiring individual adjustments for each graph and a more visual representation of data for better clarity.

Uniform Filter System

That would update all graph data simultaneously, rather than individual dropdowns for each filter. This change aimed to streamline their workflow and facilitate quicker comparisons.

Enhanced User Awareness with Filter Chips

A Uniform Filter System led to the need for filter chips to improve user awareness, we implemented filter chips to indicate the applied filters, ensuring users could easily see their selections at a glance.
